New to Natives?

FAQ’s

I’VE HEARD CONVENTIONAL LAWNS ARE AN ECOLOGICAL DISASTER- BUT WHAT ELSE CAN I WALK ON?

Try a native short grass lawn!

We offer sod installation of Buffalo grass, a short turf grass that is drought resistant and low maintenance for full sun areas. There are also fantastic seed mixes available, like “Thunder Turf” by Native American Seed (NAS) and Habiturf .

THIS SPOT IS TOO SHADY FOR GRASS. WHAT GROUND COVER CAN I USE IN Heavy SHADE?

We regularly explore solutions to this common question. The closest alternatives to a hardy lawn replacement we currently know are Frogfruit, Horseherb, and sedges (Texas and Webberville are favorite varieties).

For no-walk zones… Texas Bluegrass, Clover Fern, Sedums, Cedar and Lyreleaf sage, Woolly Stemodia, Wood Violet, and Yarrow are potential options for different situations. The shade friendly grass and wildflower mixes from NAS are also great choices.

SEED MIXES or LIVE PLANTS?

Seed mixes give you more bang for the buck, but require dedicated attention to germination and weed prevention during their 3-5 year establishment period.

Live plants allow a more deliberate look- you know what will grow where, and can see the results immediately.

In general, we use live plants to curate small areas, and seed mixes for larger wildscapes.

THANKS FOR ALL THE INFO! CAN I DO THIS MYSELF?

Absolutely!

We want to support you in connecting with your immediate environment however we can. Feeling wonder and abundance in your own back (and front!) yard is closer than it seems. Please see our list of growing services and know that we’re here to help.
